Enhancing Climate-Smart Agriculture in Iraq
This project with Salahaddin University-Erbil and the University of Kerbala aims to enhance agricultural and water management education in Iraq. The goal is to build the capacities of university staff and students in climate-smart agriculture and efficient water management, fostering innovative solutions to address Iraq’s agricultural challenges.
Innovative training and capacity building
In collaboration with Wageningen University, we developed a comprehensive training program covering climate-smart irrigation, soil salinity management, integrated pest management, and entrepreneurship. Training sessions combine theoretical knowledge with hands-on practical exercises, field visits, and study tours, ensuring participants gain real-world experience. By integrating entrepreneurial skills into the curriculum, we prepare educators to foster life skills and an entrepreneurial mindset in students. This prepares them to find jobs in the private sector or start their own businesses.
Promoting sustainable agriculture and employment
This initiative significantly enhances the expertise of university staff, enabling them to deliver high-quality education on sustainable agricultural practices. As a result, students are better equipped to address Iraq’s pressing agricultural challenges and secure their careers. The project’s holistic approach integrates gender equality and inclusion. By fostering long-term partnerships and enhancing local capacities, we aim to drive sustainable agricultural development and resilience in Iraq.
